I am sure that if you take the case to a cobbler, that he can provide you
with a thinner strap, more in keeping with what you are looking for.  They
are not unused to doing this, as they often have to provide such service for
womens' handbags, & mens' briefcases.  They are usually very reasonable
pricewise, if you find the right one that is.

They also might be able to provide a strip as Albert has suggested.
