I believe the voltmeter test indirectly solved the problem. When I put the 
connecters back on the leads for the brew boiler, everything worked fine 
again. I did expect the solution to be a simple one but did not think it 
would be that simple. Ira, you are also correct that the PID light blinks 
only to pulse the boiler on and off. 

I had other problems with the unit before this one, such as erratic PID 
displays etc. I may never know what caused all my initial problems. Perhaps 
there was more than one problem all along. After about 3 weeks the happy 
ending is I'll again be able to enjoy a latte for Easter Sunday. 

That is indeed a nice way to celebrate the day.
