The reason those lies took hold, that were only quesitonably mistruths, is
because of Gore's long history of exaggerations.
For example, how about claiming to have promised his sister on his deathbed
that he would "fight tobacco to his last breath." Too bad we have him on
tape praising the virtues of growing tobacco with his, quote "own heads" a
couple years after that.
How about claiming to have been "always pro-life?" He's also gotten in
trouble with being always "pro gun control" despite some perfect ratings
from the NRA.
My personal favorite, from the very first Presedential debate, on the very
first question, Lehrer asks him about questioning Bush's experience.
Gore's first instict is to lie, he denis having ever made such a claim.
Unforunately, we have his quotes from the NY Times, and indeed, these days
it seems to be all he is running on.
Gore doesn't get the benfit of the doubt on these little lies because quite
frankly he has done nothing to deserve it.
