Dammit all It Was A Joke.

Rotten timing for it, but it was a joke.

This whole thing is getting ridiculous.

I personally don't care if anyone on this list tells me to pull my head in.
Maybe I'd prefer it in private, maybe I deserve it in public. I know I've on
occasion sent a "Pull yer head in, mate" message. It's all part of
communicating. We're supposed to be civilised here, remember?

Now, I think the listowners have some rights - the same as we all do. Yes
they have the power to bounce any one of us, but for chrissake, apart from
our late unlamented friend Kyle when have they done so? Right, never.

Was telling JDG to pull his head in after implying Jeroen was taking the
Nazi track wrong? No. John, you are an experienced debater so don't say you
didn't know exactly what implications your phrasing would carry. Your pained
"Governance" missive backs that up also.

Was Jeroen getting too pedantic about what he'd said and how he'd said it?
Yes. Whenever you pull the "see my earlier posting" stunt for an answer I
just wanna scream.

Both of you, just think occasionally about how childish your "you said/ did
not/ answer this loaded question" little games get. And then just put
whatever message you were next going to send straight into the trashbin.
Maybe take a little walk. Maybe think up a new topic.

I think a big part of the problem here is that some people see that Jeroen's
role as a listowner and also a consistent and persistent poster is a problem
of unwarranted control. Personally, I think Jeroen merely suffers from
enthusiasm and volunteerphilia: the readiness to put his hand up, as a
listowner, to help maintain a list that is an important part of his life.
There's an answer to that problem: somebody can now volunteer to take
Jeroen's place as a listowner. Bit of the old "he who is without sin..."

Personally, I thought Eileen's response and reasoning was absolutely fine. I
don't see anywhere that some regime of censorship is being brought down on
this list. In the main, I think we're still a group of grownups who get a
bit contrary from day to day. Strange thing that, when you consider that the
Brin hisself is the archetypal contrarian. Maybe it's something we have in
common? Whaddayaknow!

So, by all means discuss the meaning of the list. Get passionate. But for
heaven's sake remember we're only one little micro in a whole big cosm and
we are all members of a civilisation.
