There are plenty of lists that have little or no guidelines and are much more peacefull than Brin-L. The guidelines dont mean a damn thing.....and they never did. Once you get past the "this is the format we use in posting to avoid confusion" part its all prissy posturing. What really counts is self-control on the part of members of this or any other list. This lists reputation *IS* Flamewar-L........spread far and wide by all the folks we have driven off in the last few years. Where have you been that you do not know this? Brin-L is almost a pariah among lists. People who have heard of us think this place is HELL. Brin has to "think" about visiting us. The etiquitte guidelines did nothing to prevent any of this. So what are they really worth in a world where cultural mores vary as much as they do. I have spent some time defending Brin-L against its detractors. What strikes me is 2 things. People know how they should treat each other, regardless of any rules, and still dont always do right by each other. The other thing is the lack of forgiveness and the holding of grudges. I'm as guilty as anyone and will be the first to admit it. I think its frustration that keeps us on this path. The list isnt what we want it to be and we dont know how to get there with everyone intact. But I think we all want pretty much the same thing from the list. OK DAMMIT!!!!!!!
