This question is in itself very symptomatic. Consider. JDG implies that to agree with anything said by another person makes you in agreement with EVERYTHING they say. Baloney. Pat Buchanan is a truly awful fellow. My opinion on that has not changed. Nevertheless, one thing that he most definitely is NOT is a moron. His IQ is in 3 digits, which puts hims so vastly above the average in this administration that it makes one weep. And yes, his conservatism, which was a steep departure from the libertarianism of Goldwater and Buckley, nevertheless kept some aspects -- isolationism and fiscal restraint. The transcendentalist neocons in charge now have only one overlap with old conservatism -- a dedication to protecting the interests of a monied aristocracy. The fact that the MOST important aristocracy is foreign (Saudi) is just one of many features that make them far more loathesome than other elements we have seen on the right. In fact, left-right has nothing to do with it. What we are seeing makes sense in one way, if you look at the "Red-vs-Blue State" maps and recall one thing. During the Civil War the plains and mountain states were so rife with rebel sympathisers that the Army and state governments kept to the towns and maintained a very low profile. In effect, ladies and gents, what we are seeing is the conquest of the United States of America by the Confederacy. They are getting their revenge. The whole NASCAR good-old-boy thing. Only a long simmering grudge could explain the incredible severity of hatred that they express toward liberals who AT WORST were patronizing about wanting to save the world. The grudge is against the Union. And we of the USA need to wake up. Wear blue. Start singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic.
