There were dozens of ways to oust Saddam right then and there. For example, thousands of Iraqi troop/prisoners were begging to be re-armed and sent north, headed by Saddam-hating generals. The result would have been an orderly if briefly violent coup. Gen Schwarzkopf begged... begged... for permission to go just 12 more hours to rescue the powple of Basra, who were uprising AT OUR REQUEST! A TAPE WITH PRES. BUSH'S VOICE SAYING "WE'RE ON OUR WAY" WAS BROADCAST FOR THAT PURPOSE. If we had JUST rescued Basra, that would have been a betrayal of other shiites but it would have at least offered a sactuary for the rebels and minimally kept our word. Instead we consigned those people to 12 more YEARS of living hell. Then Rummy has the nerve to predict "Our troops will be welcomed with kisses and flowers." HE SAID THAT THIS TIME.
