As long as we think that money is everything, we'll live and die by that
sword. And when it comes to tennis shoes, perhaps it all comes down to
money.

When someone wants a kitchen, they can go to Home Depot and have a kitchen
made offshore slammed into their house. And it'll be a darn good one. Or
they can go to a custom kitchen person and have something awesome.
Companies make money the first way. People make money, a living, a life,
the second way.

I've made what would seem like some to be a lot of money, by being really
good at what I did. People were willing to pay me to get what I could do,
because they wanted it and believed that I could do it.

I got really good at what I did by doing what I loved, and darned little
else. It took study, dedication, innate talent. And luck ... if there is
such a thing. I can even give some advice on how to be "lucky", but the
main thing I can advise is to be really skilled at something you love.

If that's software, and you love it enough, and you're skilled enough, I
think there will be a way to make enough money.

If that's not for you, consider kitchens. Everyone has to eat.

Do we learn more through cynicism, or through some other mental posture?
