I think auto manufacturing jobs were lost to cheaper markets because
automobiles are incredibly expensive not only to buy, but to upkeep and
replace. So much so that we have to buy insurance -- something that doesn't
exist if we don't use it, and punishes us for using it. When something so
expensive is also a requirement to live in our society for the most part,
something had to give. So, I don't know that it's necessarily legitimate to
compare the supposed loss of jobs for programmers to that of factory workers.
Also, I think the comparison of the tasks undertaken by a programmer to those
to a factory worker, is likewise suspect.
