Date - 20 May 06
Day - Saturday
Start - Culham Cut
End - Tesco Reading

The pub was not over exciting, there was only one group eating apart
from us and when I ordered I thought they were just there because it was
"No Smoking" and they had about 4 boisterous kids between them.
My rule when eating at somewhere so quiet is to have steak as its
unlikely to be warmed up. After a long wait the other group got their
food and ours followed soon afterwards, I needn't;  have worried as Diana
had Fish Pie and she was very pleased with it.
As we walked back to the boat it started to rain and I think it continued
most of the night.
It was fine when we got up this morning but the lock keeper didn't come
on duty untill 9 so we took Magic for a walk  over the weir and back via
the lock where the keeper had just arrived. A short chat informed us
that the rive had come up 2" over night and he was going to adjust the
weirs to suit.
When we arrived by boat he was on his first cup of tea, a stainless cup
holding a liter and needing 2 tea bags. Just as he was closing up behind
us another boat came into view so we waited for them in the rain and did
the next three locks in their company.
The rain didn't last long and we had the odd glance of sun, but the wind
still kept things on the cool side.
I saw three very large Red Eared Terrapins sitting on a floating branch,
It's hard to imagine that those little things the size of a 50p that I
use to keep could grow to something that size. I wonder if they are all
escapees or are they now breading in the wild?
We moored for the night right outside Tesco at Reading, around 5 o'clock
so Diana could do some shopping. The notices it say it 24 hr mooring but
it looks as if some of the boats may have been here a bit longer.

P.S Diana has just called me to look at the sunset reflecting down the
river.
