We started at our normal 10 am to mixed weather, some rain, some sun and
always wind. The wildlife today has been fish, namely pike, as the water
on this river is gin clear and you can see the bottom in places. One
pike was only about 45cm long, but the other was the top side of 60 cm,
in addition there have been loads of other fish but nothing larger than
10 cm.
We moored just before the footbridge above Denford Lock and walked over
the meadow to the pub, less than 5 minuets. This use to be called "The
Cock Inn" but is now known as "The Inn at Denford" They had 4 beers on
the pumps and have only been doing food for two weeks. We had the Ribeye
Beef with Yorkshire pudding, mash, roast potato, leeks, cauliflower,
broccoli, sweet potato, butternut squash, roast parsnip and gravy. This
was followed by Cheese cake and Apple and walnut cake. Coffee with
chocolates, a pint of beer each, all for around £30 and it was all
delicious. If you are passing this way by boat or car I would recommend a
visit, but do it before it gets well known.
After lunch we continued on in heavy rain passing through Thrapston,
here ther are small visitor moorings just above the old town bridge and
a very large visitor mooring below the lock by the sailing club, this
looks to be a new EA structure about 50m long. However our plan was to
moor just below Titchmash lock on the EA visitor moorings. Titchmash
lock has a massive amount of water going over the top gates and the boat
we watched going up didn't even bother to open the top paddles, they
just waited for it to fill over the gates.
