We set off in some cooler weather which was quite refreshing. We had
not gone far when I passed a boat moored on the offside with a CIBC
sticker in the window. I stopped and went to have a word with the owner
as there was no name on the boat. It turned out to be a very smart
"Badger" of ex Peckett ownership. We continued on to Fred Tarry's for
another 50lt of red at 86p this he told me was 2 pence cheaper than the
last lot he had, it was still a penny more than we paid him last tim we
passed that way. We continued on to Whilton, here the diesel was 95p. A
we arrived ther was a single boat going up in the lock, it was the boat
who had back set for us the day before so we were able to thank them,
unfortunately for us there was also a single boat waiting in the pound
ahead, so we had to go up alone. We met a few boats so things weren't to
bad and we caught a single boat up in the last pound, at the last lock
we had to wait for the coal/diesel boats to come down Argos and something.
By now in was chucking it down and I gave the steerer the good news that
the pound below was down by over a foot and he would probably have to
drop a lot of water down to get through. The atmosphere in Braunston
tunnel was very thick for the first half of the journey but improved at
the north end, BW have cut the grass on the land slip so you can now see
if anyone is trying to get out of the tunnel. We worked down the flight
with a Wyvern hire boat driven very well by a young lady before
continuing on to Napton alone. We arrived back at our moorings at about
8 30 pm unloaded the boat to the car and headed home, arriving in
Suffolk just after midnight.
