The students were out yesterday (in the freezing cold, Have they no
sense?). The unions are working up to a day of action (admittedly on a
Saturday, which rather detracts from the effect) --- and in economic
terms they ain't seen nothing yet. The cut in public service wages
that the government imposed the other day is not remotely enough to
meet the funding gap for this year, never mind the larger targets for
the next several years.

Interestingly, and perhaps strengthening Steve's point, there has been
little protest about the forthcoming abolition of the free travel area
within and between These Islands. It was maintained even at the height
of the IRA campaign, so why get rid of it now? Do our lords and
masters expect trouble, and is that why they have been reducing
liberties and giving the enforcers more powers?
