Further to this discussion, here's another modification of a post from Jan 2007:
There may be a number of email programs whose default reply styles (and even display styles) may not be what the user would actually like, and changing the behavior can be difficult. The wikipedia article I referenced in my earlier message, at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posting_style mentions that Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, and Gmail default to a top posting style, and indicates that Outlook is probably to blame for the ubiquity of top posting. The "external links" section of that page has links to "quoteFix" that will help control Outlook. The article also states that "In addition, users of mobile devices, like BlackBerries, are encouraged to use top-posting, because the devices only download the beginning of a message for viewing. The rest of the message is only retrieved when needed, which takes additional download time." As I said in the earlier message, we are not going to attempt to impose any posting standard here, but for those who genuinely which to change the behavior of their email program, there are probably subscribers to this list who can provide helpful links. - george [canals-list co-manager] www.canals.com
