Further to this discussion, here's another modification of a post
from Jan 2007:

There may be a number of email programs whose default reply styles (and
even display styles) may not be what the user would actually like, and
changing the behavior can be difficult.

The wikipedia article I referenced in my earlier message, at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posting_style

mentions that Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, and Gmail default to
a top posting style, and indicates that Outlook is probably to blame
for the ubiquity of top posting. The "external links" section of that
page has links to "quoteFix" that will help control Outlook.

The article also states that "In addition, users of mobile devices,
like BlackBerries, are encouraged to use top-posting, because the
devices only download the beginning of a message for viewing. The rest
of the message is only retrieved when needed, which takes additional
download time."

As I said in the earlier message, we are not going to attempt to impose
any posting standard here, but for those who genuinely which to change
the behavior of their email program, there are probably subscribers to
this list who can provide helpful links.
