Having run an IT Department for most of the last dozen years I was
always under the impression that backups were the audit trail if one
were needed, not saving multiple copies of entire threads. Or do people
who top post and snip nothing delete the previous message when they
receive a new one?

My big gripe on corporate mail was the wholly unnecessary use of HTML
formatting - words mean the same in any colour or font!
