Ralph, You make a good point. I have thought the same thing. However, I think reason for the "C" clip is to prevent wear on the inside of the cover plate. If water can leak between the impeller and the cover plate, pump efficiency will be reduced. If you consider the cover plate sacrificial, then toss the "C" clip and replace the cover plate periodically. Mike Wilson 5431 T/R ----- Original Message ----- From: Ralph E. A question and/or advice. On a Oberdorfer Water pump on a Universal M-18 engine. Can one operate the pump WITHOUT the ...Snap ring (C clip retainer) that holds the Impellor on the shaft ? As some of you know, I've replaced the Pump Cover with the bronze SPEEDSEAL quick change cover. I recently found the C clip had fallen off and was setting on the inside. With the cover secure, there doesn't seem to be any NEED of the clip. The Impellor isn't loose and the cover holds it in place anyway. It seems to me that this was a subject On List .. A while back. I may be wrong, but if I remember correctly, several owners had agreed that the Clip wasn't necessary.. Any comments ? Advice " Thanks, Ralph Ahseln Oblio # 5486 Gresham OR
