Ralph,
Not to belabor the point...
I have 2 Oberdorfer pumps for my engine.
One pump is new the other original.
The old pump shows very considerable wear on the inside of the cover,
probably a function of raw water, not absence of a "C" clip.
It is much easier to replace the entire pump than just the impeller.
The easy way to work on the pump is on the bench.
Even then it is problematic.

  Andy,

Thanks for the good words. I do have the tool as well.

It's still very difficult to get the retainer ring seated onto the shaft.
As to whether to leave the ring on or off, I guess the question was more
rhetorical.
The clip does seem to be rather unnecessary since the NEW cover is solid
Bronze and nothing is going to be loose or wobble inside the housing. The
impellor sure wouldn't go anywhere.

I was rather curious as to why several folks have the impression that the
Nitrile rubber Impellor would :"wear" the cover. The SPEEDSEAL cover is three
time thicker than the original cover ..
And besides, the impellor "rubs" the old one anyway and It shows no wear ??
It seems to me that the Rubber would wear away and not the Cover ??? Oh well
.. LOL

  Thanks again,

  Ralph Ahseln

I have a tool that fits in the two little holes in the "C" ring and lets me
open the ring wide enough so that I can slide the ring on the shaft very
easily. The tool is common and can be purchased at any automotive store. I
bought the my set (several differt sizes) from "Harbor Freight" a mail order
distrubutor.
