Ralph, on the Oberdorfer on my A4 the impeller shaft simply pulls out, impeller and all.  Then you can take the circlip off above decks, in the sunlight, where dropping it means picking it up off the cockpit sole instead of fishing it out of who-knows-where in the bilge.  Not true of your diesel?

Mike,

Thanks for the good advice.
Gosh, I didn't mean this to be a major discussion..    LOL !

The main point got lost, I guess.

I have INSTALLED.... a SPECIAL replacement cover..   It's called a SPEEDSEAL

A British made gadget that has been featured in lots of magazines and has a lot of folks raving about it.. I like it too..
It's a quick change cover with Thumb screws instead of the normal machine screws.
Looking at the WEB site, it can be seen that the cover is a THICK chunk of Bronze.
It's unlikely to be a problem with any kind of inside wear..

So the cover is NOT really an issue..

The problem is ..   I'm Old and stiff and getting down on my knees... to Shove a  Retaining ring (C clip) onto a shaft is a real problem..
And if (hope, never ! )   I should HAVE to make an emergency repair to the Impellor.
(One of the reasons for installing the Quick change SPEEDSEAL ...)
Getting the Clip back on the shaft .. will be a tough job for this Fat , Old boy..

So, I was asking if anyone ..Does, or has heard of ....  Leaving the damned Clip .. OFF..

LOLOLOL

I thought that , in past postings,  Someone HAD in fact talked about leaving the C ring off..
So a "Brain Picking" was my objective.

Thanks to all who took the time to advise me..
I appreciate it a lot.

Best,

Ralph,
Not to belabor the point...
I have 2 Oberdorfer pumps for my engine.
One pump is new the other original.
The old pump shows very considerable wear on the inside of the cover,
probably a function of raw water, not absence of a "C" clip.
It is much easier to replace the entire pump than just the impeller.
The easy way to work on the pump is on the bench.
Even then it is problematic.

Andy,

Thanks for the good words. I do have the tool as well.

It's still very difficult to get the retainer ring seated onto the shaft.
As to whether to leave the ring on or off, I guess the question was more rhetorical.
The clip does seem to be rather unnecessary since the NEW cover is solid Bronze and nothing is going to be loose or wobble inside the housing.  The impellor sure wouldn't go anywhere.

I was rather curious as to why several folks have the impression that the Nitrile rubber Impellor would :"wear" the cover. The SPEEDSEAL cover is three time thicker than the original cover ..
And besides, the impellor "rubs" the old one anyway and It shows no wear ??  It seems to me that the Rubber would wear away and not the Cover ???   Oh well .. LOL

Thanks again,

Ralph Ahseln

Ralph
I have a tool that fits in the two little holes in the "C" ring and lets me open the ring wide enough so that I can slide the ring on the shaft very easily.  The tool is common and can be purchased at any automotive store.  I bought the my set (several differt sizes) from "Harbor Freight" a mail order distrubutor.
