Dear CCP4 community,
I am writing to remind you of the study weekend, but
also to ask those in the UK to remember Working group 1 and Working group 2.
Working group 1 (very 70's name) is in charge of CCP4. The rules of CCP4 state
that any one capable of holding a grant in crystallography in the UK is a member
of WG1. That's ia all permanent academics, all those holding independent
fellowships (such as RS, WT, BBSRC etc) and all holding equivalent positions in
Government or Research Council labs. All companies which operate in the UK and
have a valid CCP4 licence are also full members of WG1. It meets once a year at
the study weekend. We try to keep the membership up to date but my purpose for
circulating this email is in case we have missed you. If you got this message
only via the bulletin board, please email me.
Working group 2 meets more regularly and is concerned with the suite. Its
membership is open, ideally you should be nominated by your WG1 rep.
Knowing the UK like you all do, I am sure you visions of champagne and oysters
at top class hotels for these meetings. Keep that image in your mind, it is some
comfort when you meet in small grubby rooms and eat stale sandwhiches.
I urge you all to participate in CCP4, we need your help and support.
There is third body called the Executive. This is elected by WG1 and deals with
the day to day running of CCP4 following instruction by WG1. This year Martin
Noble and Garib Murshudov reach the end of their terms. It is up to the WG1
community to nominate and elect two representatives to the Exec. There are no
term limits.
If you wish to serve or nominate someone please be ready for the meeting at the
study weekend. The nominee should be present at the meeting or confirm to me
that they will serve before the meeting. The Executive have decided to bar
themselves from nominating or re-nominating anyone.
Finally, next year the chair is up for election (other members of the Exec are
also). The renewal grant has to written beginning in 2007 and this is the
chair's job. The chair's term runs for five years. If you would like to be
chair, then please try to see me at this study weekend. Ideally the next chair
who ever this is, should be part of the Exec for the coming year.
Jim Naismith
Chair of WG1 of CCP4
