Guy,

I have worked for relatively small non-profits and the like for over 12
years, and so I thought I'd respond. (To put my answer in perspective, only
the last 6 years have been in technology (database, gis, and web)
employment - prior to that it was pure biology, and I have an MS degree. )
First, you are not wrong to say no to sales - you're perfectly justified in
telling them (assuming it's true) that this would hamper your abilities to
maintain quality web sites. Sales skills are typically quite different from
web development skills, and this is a good point to make if you're not
interested in sales. You could probably make some small headway educating
your supervisor about your skills, what you're worth, and that you need
more than a day's notice of deadlines in the future. However, small
non-profits are not likely to change much in the scheme of things, and will
never be able to afford a senior-level developer. Even when they see what
industry salaries are, they cannot afford it. Also, they will always ALWAYS
try to get more out of everyone until you say enough (which you have to
do). It's not a bad thing necessarily, but it's how they survive with so
little funding - by getting lots of hard work from people who care. For
many, it's hard to sit in that environment with the carrot of a larger
salary dangling elsewhere, especially if you feel underappreciated (on top
of the low salary). You can feel better at the end of a day's than some
(many?) in corporate settings, but in my experience feeling undervalued at
work can cut into that good feeling. So one option is: leave when something
better becomes available, climb the ladder, and do wonderful pro-bono sites
for the small non-profits when you're able to.

Hi CF_Folks,

I'd like to think my problems were youth and navet, but I'm 29 and
spent 5 years in the military, 3 in university and 2 in college.
I'm really frustrated as a developing CF developer.

I'm working for a non-profit organization so I am getting peanuts (I'm
talking burger flipper wages). I can accept that (somewhat) because I
am fresh out of college and a relatively junior developer. However
they are now asking me to not only develop and maintain the sites but
to do sales of promotion on our sites to raise revenue. I am the only
developer for 8 domains and I also do all the graphics as well.

Am I wrong to say no to doing sales? What should I do here other than
look for another job (which I am doing)? I mean, these people are
shooting themselves in the foot as there is only one other CF
developer in the area that can do what I can do and he charges $95
CDN/hr to do it (I get $10). How do I let them know that without
sounding arrogant? This organization does great work that I believe
in, but they just can't seem to get it together with technology. Twice
they have advertised new website launch dates without letting me know
about it until that very day.

I'm no good at politicking, so any advice would be appreciated here.

Yours In Conservation,
