Funny thing. I had to pay $270 in federal taxes for the year 2000. Now I'm
getting $300 back next month.

No, but you are due a refund, it reduces the amount by the amount of the
check.
Not sure what the impact will be if you owe taxes, but I'm betting it will
increase the amount you owe.
