Agreed. All the major wars that have ever been fought were because European countries couldn't get a long.  There's a long history of mistrust and dislike to overcome here.

  Not for a long time. The EU was not designed to be anything but an economic union. It is slowly becomming more of a political and maybe even a military union, but it will be decades before the internal quarrels will be solved, and decades more before most people will consider themselves to be citizens of Europe instead of citizens of their country.
