I'd be very surprised if the EU is able to successfully finance, equip, manage, support and deploy a military force comparable to the United States any time soon.  

The logistics alone make this difficult.

  statistics for the size of the potential EU military back when I was in high
  school. And eventually they will eclipse the power of the US Army or at
  least be a close 2nd so they will be a force to be dealt with.
