Basically just save the *GCF files
if you reinstall the computer like i did i got it to work by
installing steam..turning off steam copying the gcfs into the
steamapps folder and restarting steam and it recognized them.

You dont know how pissed i would have been if i had to redownload hl2
the day before launch. But i got it to work :>
