MPG is affected by type of gas, engine break-in, driving style, etc. 
And driving style has a lot of variables in it: do you coast a lot,
use the brakes too much, quickly accelerate, drive in town vs.
freeway, etc.

I'd be willing to bet, all things being equal, hybrids get no better
than a VW Jetta wagon TDI which gets about 45 city/55 highway with the
right driving.  Which is why I think hybrids are a red herring.

Maybe I'm missing something, but call me when they can do 100MPG.  An
the Jetta doesn't have a 1000 pound battery that'll have to be
disposed of.
