Now that's a fine idea.  Even better is to get the landlord to fix the
electrical himself.

Just a bit of warning. Tampering with the electrical might violate your
lease. My friend in college did something similar which was determined
to be the cause of the fire that burnt his building to the ground. He
had to pay over $80,000 out of pocket. Hire an electrician or for the
same price go to Sams Club and buy another A/C unit for $149.
