I blame attention span problems on the ages prior to school. I never had the attention span problems, but growing up I'd often being doing the same thing for several hours at a time anyway.
I didn't really watch much TV, there were a couple of shows I liked, however most of the time I was doing something else, like playing with legos for hours at a time. I blame attention span issues on television cartoons that only last 7 minutes and don't require young kids to pay attention or to keep up through commercials. In any event, I would not consider that amount of time disproportionately small for a five year old. He would be getting quite a bit less at public school and there is the matter of attention span to consider.
