Yeah, it also depends greatly on the area, hilly areas aren't very well
suited as I understand.

I read similar articles when I was looking early this year.  Hybrids MPG
really depend on how they are driven.  To get the good gas mileage, one
needs to be slow on the start, long on the break and drive at consistent
speeds.  On my trip down I-5 here in California last week, I kept at a
constant 75mph as much as I could, I got 45mpg in the valley and 54mpg
going over the Grapevine.  Lots of downhill where I was using no gas!
