Overall this, to me, is a pure free speech issue. Gel has brought up
points such as talking about Nazis in Germany.

The thing there is that Nazis are criminals. The limit of free speech
is where it infringes on the rights of others (yelling fire in a
theatre) or provides information about illegal acts such as child
pr0n.

Inevitably something somebody publishes is going to offend someone at
some point, so you can't base a policy on this grey area of 'offense'.
You simply have to educate people on how to properly oppose something
they're offended by via publishing their own content, boycotting the
publication, peaceful legal protests, boycotting the advertisers, etc.

Further, the point has been made that many of the protesters
destroying Danish gov't property (despite the fact that the
publication was private) do so because they cannot distinguish between
private and gov't publications. That is, their own gov'ts typically
control the news and they assume the Denmark gov't controls the
cartoon paper.

Don't know if that's true, but it may be a good point.
