Be aware that running through the pain is a really bad idea. You can end up
like me - with bursitis in your hip and out of running commission for months
- not fun. It never hurt when I ran either - it hurt when I biked. And,
then, after the cortisone shot, it hurt all the f'in time.

IT band syndrome is often associated with knee pain, so this may not be the
issue for you (though I had no knee pain at all - just outer thigh and hip
pain). The stretches are pretty much the same either way.

I'd recommend getting it checked out though. The physical therapist did this
totally wacky thing to me that worked wonders - she put a band around my
upper inner thigh and then around her back. Then, she held my leg still and
pushed away from my hip - stretching the actual hip joint. So strange but so
good. It helped a lot for me, but I can't think of anyway to do it to
yourself, because you have to really relax your leg muscles to get it to
work.
