Uh....because that's not the law. It's not considered a business expense if you 
are self-employed. It's a deducted expense *after* you figure your schedule C, 
so you end up paying the self-employment tax on it. 

There is though a bill that I believed has passed in the Senate to correct the 
disparity. Nase.org has a nice "advocacy" center where you can look up current 
congressional bills that effect self-employed and small business and see how 
they are doing.
