The problem with individuals buying insurance, well, invidually, is that they are a risk pool of 1. Insurers don't like that. I was self-employed for quite some time and tried to get coverage through BlueCross for myself, my wife and my daughter because I didn't really like the plan I had been on with Mega Life and Health. BlueCross refused to insure my wife because she has a history of back pain. Not cancer, not heart disease, she'd never been out of work for back injury or anything, just because of a history of back pain.
And yes, I was able to get coverage with Mega for all of us. But that's because they can afford the risk pool because they offer crappy coverage. It was basically $400 a month for major accident coverage. When my daughter had to be in the NICU for 48 hours after being born we found out that out policy had a $500 a day room and board cap, so we were out of pocket $5000 for 2 days in the hospital. I'm sure there will be insurance companies happy to offer you coverage if McCain's plan went through. But it is likely to be companies like Mega that ended up being really pretty crappy.
