I am in favor of socializing medicine, in general, but the devil is in
the details of course.

One of the first things we know to be true is that better preventative
care will reduce the incidence of more expensive serious medical
issues. Hence the preventative part. So I think that socializing basic
preventative care makes sense and is a boon to our society.

As for major medical, that needs some good thinking done on it. There
are people working on models for better healthcare coverage, like the
Apollo Initiative here in Oregon. But I certainly don't have an obvious
easy answer.

As for rationing, yes, rationing will happen in one way or another.
But the rationing already happens by a faceless bureaucracy. My
insurance policy doesn't cover all sorts of things, like chiropractic
care. I don't get a choice about that and the insurance company is
certainly a faceless bureaucracy. In fact, we have BlueCross here at
work, which is who denied my wife coverage before. Try talking to the
people that decide on coverage some time, it isn't a particularly fun
conversation.

So right now I have a situation where my basic coverage is decided by
a faceless bureaucracy and then it is further rationed by my ability
to pay for anything that isn't covered. Seems to me that if we go the
socialized route we stand a chance of having better routine coverage
for less money and then I'll still be facing a rationing system like I
am now. Sounds like a good deal to me.
