I like the idea, but I would draw a different conclusion.

This time it is oil, next time it is copper (the world is running out of 
it, to much wiring for computers I suppose). Or it is that somebody 
starts a war against somebody else, who you don't like (where and why 
did Osama get his training?). Or it is personal favors.

It is time to recognize that the only long term interest of any Western 
country is the democratic and peacefull development of every other 
country. And it is time to act upon that, regardless of whether a 
country has oil, gold, copper or nothing. No more short term thinking of 
supporting one dictator against another one we like even less (remember 
all of the Western World supported Saddam against Iran in the 
eighties?), but accepting the short term consequences for the long term 
benefits. And yes, if one of the consequences is that oil will soon be 
$40 a barrel, I am perfectly fine with that (although I definitely won't 
be attending DevCon in that case).
