Atkins is in no way "virtually the same diet".

Atkins says "carbs bad", all carbs. Protein and fat good. Ugh.
Plus, Atkins IIRC does not distinguish between "good fats" and "bad fats".

The author of South Beach gives credit to Atkins, Pritikin, and Ornish for well-meant honest efforts, but that they published before a lot of the current research on metabolism and cardiovascular health.

He also talks about McGovern and crew and the original AHA diet based on flawed research, including ignoring the data from Crete as an "anomoly". That anomoly later turned out to be the key - Med. diet (monounsaturated fats etc.).

My cardiologist approves of South Beach. He does NOT approve of Atkins. He told me I needed to cut down on the simple or refined carbs which raised my Triglycerides because they affect bad LDL cholesterol. Also told me I was doing the right thing in eating complex carbs / whole grains with fiber, in eating lean sources of protein, and in eating "good" fats.

The "no carb" phase of South Beach is only two weeks. After that, it is a lot more balanced. I haven't read the third "maintenance" phase yet.
