Taco,

We host about 20 domains internally on an adsl connection, mainly shitty little html sites that get 100-1000 page views per month, most of our traffic is mail, [touch wood] we have had less than 4 hours total downtime in the past 12 months (due to the adsl) the previous 12 months we had a 14 day blackout - because telstra typed an ip address incorrectly

The cost of server setup maintenance and keeping the clients happy we would need about 40 paid domains to break even - which then puts the load outside of typical adsl bandwidth.

Remember that business adsl charges are far more expensive than domestic sevices - for about 1gb traffic in on a 512/512 connection you are looking at about $240 per month (or $290 for carrier grade like request etc).
If you want to have a go - try a linux distro called e-smith, its a cut down version of redhat with apache, mail, file server & firewall etc, its a very simple introduction into linux web hosting (i have never used it with cf though .....)

Its the little things that make a difference with your own hosting - is it easy to set up a domain, modify the mailboxes, change a password, monitoring the bandwidth used, charging your clients etc
If  the simple tasks are easy it allows you to concentrate on making money rather than stuffing around. Look at some sort of an administration system - if you want some advice you can email me off list.

You will also need 2 x static ip addresses for your dns (if you want to host .com.au domains)

This is not a path to be taken lightly, you will need solid linux support 24 hours a day (either that or dont give your clients your mobile/home number :)

For any mission critical sites dont host them without bigtime redundancy - pay the extra bucks and host them outside.

This morning i walked throught the door & the phone was ringin' - my emails not working ........ ;(

Subject: [cfaussie] [OT] ADSL Q

Would anyone on this list pay to have their ColdFusion websites cheaply hosted on a ADSL line, or on a ADSL line with your own server? (And being able to put/use any CF tag or DLL on it....)

Do a lot of people have sufficient knowledge to host their own websites, i.e. run Apache, IIS, SQL Server etc.?

Is this an area only interesting to sell to end-users and not CF developers?

Cheers for any response.

Taco

PS. I hope this is not an inappropriate question to ask on this list...!!
