Anyone with half a day to spare and a 'IIS for Dummies' book (or, g0d forbid, FrontPage!) can get an IIS web server running. The danger with this is not in getting the server up and running, it's in locking it down and making it secure. As the administrator of the network, you'd need to implement firewalls & IDS gear, or risk one of your clients picking up a nasty (SQL Slammer comes to mind) and taking out your link(s). The same goes for letting them run SQL on their own (can anyone say 'blank SA password?' :)

Then you've got to have reasonably sophisticated networking equipment to find out what's going on when somebody from inside or outside your network is flooding you with data, when it happens, so you can fix it and get things working for the rest of your clients.

Personally, I don't think it's worth the hassle. About 18 months ago, I leased a server in a US data centre. I run W2K Server, IIS, SQL 2000, CFMX, mail and DNS on this server, and it works *great*. I host all my sites on there, and host a number of small sites for some clients of mine. The data centre has multiple OC3 ATM links out to the net, and is amazingly fast - from my server, I've had downloads from M$ at 4Mb a second (no proxying). The support there is fantastic, and maintain a 'hands-off' approach, unless requested to do otherwise - so the box is yours to administer. I pay under a grand a quarter for 300GB of data transfer a month, and I'm only using about 10% of that.

Just my $0.022 (inc GST)

Cheers,
