I don't really have time to weigh in on this thread and give it the attention it deserves. However, there is a reason people pay money for ColdFusion.

What specifically do they think is wrong with CF: can't be only cost and its future, cos they are useless arguments.
The thing that worries me is that they are professionals..... The general discussion was that is was going out and the start up costs.
CF is cheap. What is the estimated cost of the project?? CF is typically a fraction of the cost of the application and its ongoing maintenance.
Have i learnt a language which that will not exist in 3 years time???
As for the future. CF will deploy on any J2EE appserver. CF is in fact a Sun Certified application. Does J2EE have a future?

You might have a look at http://www.cffaq.com/ to start your research -- but you really need specific facts to refute rather than some relegious debate over PHP vs CF. Who knows for the project in question PHP might be suitable?
