5.) A commercial vendor actually drives the product to be better to beat competitors and win market share, while open source stuff like PHP has a development cycle that tends to follow along rather than lead.
Being somewhat of an opensource advocate, I believe that the success or failure of a commercial or opensource application has a lot to do with the company/community behind it. And that can be success/failure defined as market leading, or best supported, or most innovative, or whatever.
Some opensource apps are very cutting edge and superior to equivalent commercial apps. Some are not. I don't think there is any evidence to suggest a trend that commercial apps per se are more successful than open source ones.
