Joe:
I've been through all the motions except buying. 4l80e is the way to go but
is real spendy. locally i was quoted about $4200.00 to have this put in my
65. it is a very complicated install. drive shaft shortened, rear housing
changed to accept cable Speedo, cross member moved, trans needs to be wired
for computer, and trans hump needs some modification.
also the 4l80e robs i was told an extra 50 HP and weighs a 100 pounds more
than a turbo 400. With all this info I decided to go a different way.
I'm going the turbo 400 with a gear vendor overdrive. the gv ODs are about
the size of a coffee can and are capable of 1200 hp.you end up with 6 forward
gears as you can split each gear.
yes there is some wiring but not a complicated install like the 4l80e. drive
shaft has to be shortened and i do believe cross member needs to be moved
back.
$1000.00 should buy you a nice th400 and the gv is (ouch) $2200.00. This is
spendy too but you end up with a final ratio of . 78 to 1(22%).
