I used a 12" I beam as I have brick above the door openings. If you are
siding you can use engineered lumber and each manufacture will give to load
ratings based on spans. Conventual lumber will eventually sag and shrink -
Engineered lumber will not. I built my house using Truss Joist Institute
(TJI) products and they makes headers called Microlams.

I'm sure glad that I asked the question. Door size seems like a
no brainer, but the additional input has been enlightening. Should
have asked you(se) guys a long time ago. Thanx a bunch. I may
need to spend some time with that garage junkies web site.
For the 18 & 20 foot doors, what did you guys use for a header?
I'd like to go taller with the doors, but due to zoning set backs &
proximity to the house I don't dare.
