The operating range on a Performer is from idle to 5,500rpm. I ran a Performer intake w/800 Holley spreadbore on my 68 El Camino's 468" and set the rev limiter on it at 6,000rpm. A Performer Rpm would work better up high but the Performer would work better down low.
I've never been a fan of Edelbrock Performer carbs since they just won't make the HP that Holleys or Demons will, all things being equal.
Mechanical secondaries work great if you have decent gearing and /or a manual trans. Otherwise,I prefer vacuum secondaries. That latter tend to get a little better fuel economy,as well.

That seems like a lot of motor for a Performer intake. Perhaps a Performer RPM air gap would be more appropriate.
I'm a fan of the Performer 750, myself, because I find it easier to tweak than a Holley, but Holleys are a damn good carb, too.
I like to keep it as simple as possible - mechanical secondaries, manual choke, throw it on the manifold and run, and all the Edelbrock performer carbs I've had have been great.
