my dog with severe collapsed trachea requiring surgery never coughed ( the collapse was very sudden, possibly caused by hitting the door handle while unrestrained during car wreck, she was short of breath with blue gums), but her grandmother with moderate collapse did - it was a dry cough almost like clearing the throat, hers was caused by enlarged heart all five of my girls now take glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM in my experimental attempt to strenghten their tracheas, which are made of cartilage reverse sneezing is almost a snort more than cough, I think sometimes it is caused by allergens or dust in the air
