Charlotte, I didn't say that "I" viewed dogs as livestock. I was referring
to the commercial breeders who were the subject of the thread. Nor was I
condoning inhumane treatment. I was commenting on the skewed views of our
times when a man who kills one dog gets two years in jail and the
abortionist is praised. I'm not saying that the guy shouldn't get his jail
sentence for throwing the bichon out into traffic, but don't you see the
irony?
Don't you ever look at the way evil is called good and good is called evil
in our times and wonder how things can go on? Dogs are good, they add a lot
to the lives of their owners, and we enjoy ours, but if I had to choose
between my dogs and my child---- I guess what I am saying is that there
should be some balance in life or at least that the priorities of life
should make sense.
As far as the puppy mills go, if the dogs are well treated and housed, then
it isn't against the law to breed dogs for profit. Unfortunately, the profit
and commercial breeding usually means unhealthy conditions and bad breeding
practices.
And then there is the question of what is a puppy mill? Is the person who
has two or more dogs and breeds them strictly for puppies to sell any better
than a person who has numerous dogs and breeds for sales? Is a puppy mill
one that has unhealthy conditions? I know of some show breeders who have
their houses full of dogs and it is as unhealthy as any puppy mill (for both
humans and dogs). Where do you draw the line and who gets to be God?
All the best,
Susan Cochran
