I had a cavalier puppy that growled too. It was the first puppy I bred and
kept here to raise in a household with 4 young children. It was just too
much for the puppy to be scooped off the ground all the time and receive
unwanted attention. I solved my problem by putting an open crate in the
kitchen and telling the kids that they were not allowed to take the puppy
out of the crate; they were to let it come out on its own. I also directed
them not to pick the puppy up. They were only allowed to sit on the floor
and let the puppy come to them. And I started taking care not to come up
behind the puppy and scoop it off the ground, but rather to call the pup to
come to me and then pick her up. The puppy grew up to be a loving adult,
but I do believe I would have had major problems had I not intervened in the
situation.

It is for this reason that I do not like to place a puppy in a home with
children under the age of 10, unless the puppy is at least 12-14 weeks old,
or it is a particularly outgoing puppy.

If I were you, I would take the puppy back, and give them a different puppy
that is very outgoing and at least 4 months old.
