Dear Marilyn, The only experience I've had personally with a Cavalier puppy
who growled was rather interesting - in the way it turned out. Had a litter
of four - all very outgoing and happy except for this one girl - we actually
called her "Growly"! I was really concerned as I had never heard of a
Cavalier puppy growling and everyone I asked seemed just as surprised. She
also acted shy which seemed to fit as we thought she was afraid, thus the
growling.
Anyway, to follow up - I placed her in a home with adults who had years of
experience with Guide Dogs for the Blind - explaining to them that this girl
did not have the typical, fearless Cavalier temperament. They were willing
to "work with her". Two days after she left for her new home, her people
called to say that not only had she not growled, but she was exhuberant and
extremely happy to meet any and all people! That was 9 months ago - they
tell me that she has never, not once, growled - and, is the friendliest dog
they have ever had.
Not sure if this applies to your friend's situation, but thought I'd share.
