. I
don't believe in hitting a dog, especially around the head/face. It can
make him head shy and/or result in defensive behavior.

Susan, I was not advocating hitting the puppy. The tap on the nose is just
that, a touch-- NOT a hit. The correction is in the VOICE TONE. The tap is
a touch on the nose to let the dog know that the voice correction is for
puppy. I have trained many puppies over the last 26 years and this method
ALWAYS works. Again, let me emphasize, the correction is in the stern "NO!"
of the voice and the puppy is NOT hit.

I have used this method for housetraining, to discourage jumping up, to stop
finger chewing, etc. It always works with Cavaliers. In fact, after the
initial correction, all is needed is a hand signal-- palm up like the stop
signal that policemen use in traffic--- and the voice correction. I am
amazed that anyone would think that I advocated hitting a Cavalier! How you
managed to read that into my post is beyond me.
All the best,
Susan Cochran
