Anathea: Sometimes a dog needs to go outside by itself. You may not be able or want to take it out. It needs to exercise and do its business regardless of weather. It needs to go outside when it is inconvenient for you to keep it inside (cleaning house, guests, etc.). You need to provide it with a safe area for those occasions. You need a fence.
The fenced area can be as large or as small as you want. Even a portable enclosure like a small dog run will work. Don't kid yourself that you or your husband will always take it out, you won't. Don't kid yourself that the dog won't wander off, it will. And just when you least expect it. A fence will give you peace of mind knowing your dog is safe. Secondly, take your new puppy to obedience classes. Start with puppy kindergarten when you get him/her. If you will want to do agility or other off-lead activities with your dog, then basic obedience classes will help you train your dog to do what is expected of it. Cavs are like little Labradors really, a big dog in a little dog's body. Have fun.
