Hi, everyone;

I have a puppy buyer that is incredibly frustrated with housebreaking her
puppy, and we need some help. Hopefully someone has some great
ideas.

The situation is that the puppy is about 14 weeks old, and is piddling
and pooping in her expen (that part is okay), or in her crate or the floor.
She's also stepping and/or dancing in poo and spreading it about the ex-
pen, or sometimes will lie in the piddle or poo. And <sigh> she's also
eating it sometimes. Background info would include that the puppies
(while here) were using the cedar potty area and newspapers in their
expen from about 6 weeks on, never in their crate/house; they weren't
eating poop; and weren't lying in their messes - at least usually not,
sometimes they'd plop down after playing and might be near a 'used'
newspaper... So, these are relatively new behaviors, could be stress
related (although we haven't located the reason for a stress), and they
don't make any sense.

Puppy was doing fairly well at pottying outside for the first week-plus,
until the weather turned cold (20's), and the owner changed the routine
to have her using the expen inside, with weewee pads. She went from a
combo of Eukanuba small breed puppy and Steve's raw/frozen to Innova
food, so she's getting good food. Hmm, what else can I mention to help
set the scene?!? Otherwise she's a cheerful, snuggly little girl; no
strange behaviors other than the "bathroom" ones...

The situation is that although the new owner knows that housebreaking
isn't a fast or easy thing, it certainly shouldn't include some of these
new and frustrating problems. What I'm hoping for are some ideas to
help the new owner before gets too tired of the frequent bathing and
mopping - and hubby gets tired of having to deal with the less-than-joyful
part of a new puppy! I've heard over and over that the toy breeds are
harder to housebreak, and I guess I've never really bought into it - in my
VAST experience! <G> But, if there's something new that we need to
know about housebreaking, would someone please shed some light??
We are really hoping to resolve these bizarre issues, and need the
collective wisdom! I hope I've remembered everything, in my stress-
induced, befuddled brain I might've left a few things out, but the bottom
line is that the owner is very frustrated and I'd like to help her work
through this; it's driving us both crazy trying to figure out what's wrong!

HELP!!!!
        Sandra
