Kris,

I have been microchipping (Home Again System) my dogs for
almost 4 years now. No one leaves my house without one!
The "Avid" system has also come out with their "Eurochip"
which can be read by most scanners, and they have perfected
the membrane which surrounds the chip to keep it from
migrating.

In 4 years, I have had 2 puppies (one lost - one stolen)
returned to their rightful owners because of having a chip.
One took their puppy on vacation (some Virginia Beach
Campground) and pup ran off, and was taken in by someone.
They returned to New York hysterical and heartbroken...but
on their answer machine was the folks that had their baby.
Dad drove all the way back down to collect their puppy. The
other was stolen right from the front yard (one of those
stories where the kids were supposed to watch puppy but
Parents should have been supervising!) and again, a
hysterical family...next week a child was walking THEIR
PUPPY down THEIR STREET...the child stated his "parents gave
him the puppy last week". Called animal control, one swipe
of the microchip told the tale.

It is also a permanent medic-alert bracelet of sorts...and
information can be changed anytime with a quick phone call.

I have had one family who refused to purchase a puppy that
had a microchip in it...and I curtly informed them they
would have to go elsewhere.

It is a wonderful practice, is a form of chain of custody
for the breeder, fulfills the "permanent ID" requirements
with AKC, etc., etc.
